Settle in for one of my favourite weddings of last summer! As an elder emo/indie kid, as soon as Ellen & Cameron messaged me about photography for their As you Like It wedding, I knew it was for me. They messaged saying it would be colourful, alternative and with a 2000’s Kerrang playlist.. sold!!

As You Like It – A Newcastle city centre wedding venue
As You Like It is a Newcastle wedding venue, tucked into Jesmond on the edge of the city centre. It’s a bar/restaurant spread across three floors, and like most of The Apartment Group’s venues, it’s pretty quirky inside. While there isn’t much natural light or outdoor space, it’s a really cool wedding location with it’s very own personality. If you like a maximalist style, this has it.

Cosy wedding ceremonies at As You Like It
Ellen & Cameron’s ceremony was held in the downstairs bar, adorned with fairy lights and red and burgundy flowers. When I arrived, all their family and friends were seated and ready for the bride to arrive and there was a general buzz in the room. It also appeared everyone had got the memo of the colour theme. So many guests were wearing pink, red or bright colours.

Ellen’s Dad walked her down the aisle and I definitely saw a little glimmer of tears in Cameron’s eyes. The ceremony was short, sweet and stress free. I think everyone was raring to congratulate the happy couple and get the celebrations started! They’d both always told me the party was the important part of the day for them.

Colourful confetti photo goals
These are probably my favourite confetti shots from my 2025 wedding season. They are so colourful and vibrant, I can’t get enough! If you want similar shots, always go for multi-coloured, large confetti and buy more than you think you need. If there’s any left, you can use it for group shots or portraits to add some colour.

Colourful emo wedding reception at As You Like It
We need to take a minute to talk about Ellen & Cameron’s wedding details. I already knew the colour scheme and had recommended them Sunday Girl Floral as a florist, so I had been expecting incredible flowers. But all the other details were so cool and right up my street! They’d fully lent into the emo but full colour style. I could have taken shots of just their decor all day.

While everyone headed upstairs for cocktails, canapes and general good times, the ceremony room got turned around into the wedding breakfast space. I loved the setup, especially with the fireplace and fairylights. Although this was peak summer, I imagine it would make for a really cute winter wedding venue.

Relaxed wedding celebrations at As You Like It
It was a gorgeous summer day so everyone headed out on to the terrace of As You Like It for cocktails and canapes. There were only 60 guests which I think is always a wedding sweet spot. A good crowd, but one where you won’t be overwhelmed as a couple in trying to say hi to everyone.

Modern and colourful wedding photography at As You Like It
When Ellen and Cameron originally booked me, because of the lack of natural light/space, we’d talked about getting a taxi somewhere to do their portraits. But actually, there’s plenty of good little spots at As You Like It, you just need to be a bit creative.
The front of the venue is good for more of a city feel, and there’s plenty of room for your group shots there too. However.. on this particular day, as you can see from Ellen’s veil, it was a bit too windy out there for what we wanted! Luckily, As You Like It has the perfect other spot, and it went perfectly with the colour palette of the day.

These pink doors are iconic if you look through As You Like It’s Instagram. They’re a perfect spot for photos – great light, protected from the weather and just cute! We did group photos here, and then once everyone was heading in to find their seats for dinner, I hung back with Ellen and Cameron. While you wait to be announced into your breakfast is the perfect time to get some portraits done. It means they don’t eat into the rest of the day, and you get to spend more time during the drinks reception just having fun and seeing everyone. I’m not a photographer who likes to steal you away for too long!

Speeches, emo bangers and temporary tattoos
This blog could go on forever as I have so many favourite images to share, so I’m going to reign myself in. You do have a wedding to plan, after all. After everyone was called in for the wedding breakfast, there were intimate speeches and then a really chill meal.

As evening guests arrived, the room was changed around again for the party to kick off! There was a popcorn machine, temporary tattoos and the most gorgeous retro Lambeth wedding cake. The tattoos went down a treat! I would highly recommend them for guest interest and just a bit of fun! Now though.. the best bit of the day. The party…

Emo wedding disco vibes at As you Like It
I’d already been pre-warned the playlist was going to be like listening to Kerrang in the 2000’s/2010s. Honestly, my absolute favourite vibe! Ellen & Cameron’s first dance was Bring Me The Horizon, and then the DJ span some true emo classics.. All American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, Paramore etc. It was one of those weddings I really wanted to stay and party, had I not had a 6 month old at home who would be up in the night!
