I live in Newcastle, so I often head up to Northumberland to do engagement photography at Bamburgh Castle. Today I’m sharing Noel & Emily’s cold, but gorgeous prewedding shoot!
Bamburgh Castle engagement photography
We moved to Newcastle 3 years ago now, and the first time I visited Bamburgh Castle was to shoot an incredible wedding. Driving from the A1 and seeing the castle rise up through the countryside was incredible and it’s still one of my favourite views. Bamburgh has since become one of my absolute favourite places in Northumberland. It is totally stunning and I feel like every time I go, I discover new viewpoints and scenic spots. Even last weekend we went there in our campervan and I found a whole new angle to photograph the castle from! So, when Noel & Emily told me they wanted their prewedding shoot to be somewhere in Northumberland, I knew were to suggest.

They’re getting married in June, so we locked in a date for April and tentatively watched the weather forecast that week. I’ll be honest, the whole week I thought we were going to have to cancel. The weather was looking windy and rainy and generally miserable! By the time the weekend was nearing, it forecast rain for the whole day, but with a bit of a break in the evening. So, we decided to give it a go for sunset! Even as I was driving up from Newcastle, I wasn’t overly optimistic, and Noel & Emily were coming from Edinburgh. It was spitting on the motorway, but as I came near to Bamburgh, the clouds started to pass a bit. I still can’t believe how lucky we got!

Couples photography with Bamburgh castle
Bamburgh beach is great for an engagement shoot because it has different points of interest. You have the beach, but also the dunes, and the castle. As mentioned, I’ve also discovered a new viewpoint from a local road which adds a whole new perspective. There’s loads of options! We started our shoot in the dune while we waited for sunset to come out a bit more.

I love to use a few different backdrops with couples, to try different things and keep it moving. We moved on to the beach to get some walking photos as sunset hit the clouds.

Walking shots are a really easy way to make couples feel comfortable, and movement always works on camera. The sunset wasn’t the best I’ve seen, but I still loved the golden flares in these.
Cute engagement photography on Bamburgh Beach

I love it when couples bring the energy, so when Noel picked up Emily I was super keen. Piggybacks always make for awesome photos as they’re cute, but also add a element of laughter and fun. These are probably my favourite from the whole session!

Wet toes and sunset photos on Bamburgh beach
By this point, sunset was going to be the best we were going to get, and then clouds were starting to reflect orange in the waves. We finished by trying to get some shots right by the waves. Just as I’d lined up the perfect reflection, a wave came crashing in further than we thought! I loved Emily and Noel’s dedication to the shot, who went back for more.
