Having moved from London to Newcastle Upon Tyne last autumn, this was my first season as a wedding photographer in the north east! As well as splitting my time shooting weddings in London, I shot a lot of weddings in and around the toon in 2024. I thought I’d run down some of the favourite venues I’ve been to so far. Newcastle Upon Tyne and the surrounding area has some really amazing wedding venues, and I’ve really loved getting to know them.
Let’s start with some of the inner city Newcastle Upon Tyne wedding venues I’ve been loving this year. So far, they’ve been the breweries…
Newcastle Brewery Wedding venues
- Tyne Bank Brewery
Tyne Bank Brewery is one of the larger brewery spaces in the Ouseburn and can hold up to 200 guests. I was there this September for Lois & Ben’s wedding – they tied the knot at the Civic Centre, then headed to Tyne Bank for a big old party in the evening. I love this venue as it oozes cool with it’s black brick walls, but you can also bring so much colour and versatility to it! It’s a brilliant space for both a wedding breakfast and a party long into the night. What’s even better is the option to hire street food trucks as your catering for the wedding.
- Full Circle Brewery
I actually have a wintery FCB wedding on my edit screen right now! I’ve been lucky enough to be at Full Circle Brewery a few times, and one thing that sets it apart is their staff. Kate, their wedding co-ordinator is amazing, and all the bar staff are always so friendly and lovely. You know you’ll be well looked after if you get married here. From a wedding photographer’s POV, I love that the ceremony space is really light and a minimalist feel. You can do do so much with this space though, to truly make it yours. I also love the couples shots you can get in the brewery space – they look so cool!
Newcastle register office wedding venues
I’ve photographed my fair share of register office weddings this year, and 2 venues stand out for me!
- Newcastle Civic Centre
Located right in the heart of Newcastle, this 1960s building is almost stuck in a time warp, which I actually love! The whole thing felt like walking into Mad Men. However, it doesn’t feel rundown in the slightest. It’s really well kept and just has loads of nice little features. There’s so many opportunities for cool photos in here. The largest ceremony room is light and bright, but still with a nod to the mid century heritage.
- North Tyneside Register Office
I’m a little biased as I live in North Shields, but I absolutely love North Tyneside register office. It looks so cute from the front and the main ceremony room is really lush. The staff are lovely and the whole place just feels super relaxed. You have the benefit of having some reception venues within walking distance, as well as the beach/riverside for some nice photos too.
My favourite North East wedding venues further field from Newcastle
One joy this year has been exploring further afield and discovering Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire. There’s so many lush venues that can’t all make it on the list, but here are some stand out countryside venues I’ve absolutely adored in 2024.
- Bamburgh Castle
I’m not even sure where to start on Bamburgh Castle. I’ve written a whole blog about it, but in short: it’s a dream. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, let alone as a wedding venue too. The views, the beach, the dunes… unbelievable! It really is breathtaking and a jewel in Northumberland.
- Charlton Hall
Also in Northumberland, you’ll find another gem in the countryside – Charlton Hall. You may have preconceptions of a country estate wedding venue, but throw them all out for this Northumberland wedding venue. The decor is super modern and quirky and completely unique compared to a traditional countryside venue. If you want something a bit different, but with the space and elegance of a rural estate, you got it! I love the chequered floor in the ceremony room, the iconic giraffe on the staircase, the furniture. Everything, really!
- The Croft
One more wedding venue deserves a mention before I wrap up this list! And that is The Croft in Darlington. It’s a new venue, and another to add to your list of quirky countryside venues. It’s in the portfolio of Apartment Group wedding venues, and in their normal style it’s decorated in a completely unique way. The vibe inside is giving Parisian rooftop garden and it’s ceremony room is a Garden Chapel. It’s all really beautiful and maximalist to a tee!
